At its core, wire fraud is very similar to mail fraud, a federal offense.<\/p>\n<p>But it\u2019s undeniable that the development of the Internet has made these types of financial crimes easier to carry, and therefore more dangerous. Wire fraud is now one of the most popular internet frauds.<\/p>\n<p>It occurs when someone tries <strong>defrauding a person or organization through electronic communications, such as emails or text messages.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Fraudsters use false pretenses to get you or your employees to wire money to their bank accounts. Once you discover the fraud, hackers are usually long gone, and the money is irretrievable.<\/p>\n<p>In the U.S., wire fraud is considered a criminal offense under federal law. Wire fraud can be carried out interstate or even internationally.<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s not uncommon to have fraudsters contact US companies from overseas \u2014 in scams more elaborate than the \u201cNigerian prince\u201d one.<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s especially hard to keep track of what\u2019s legitimate and what\u2019s a fraudulent attempt when you work with overseas suppliers. In the former, they hack into a real contact\u2019s email and pretend to be them. It\u2019s nearly impossible to detect.<\/p>\n<p>In the latter, they replicate a legitimate email address or website that\u2019s almost identical: using john@gooogle.com (3 letter O) for instance, or redirecting you to a bogus website in a <a href=\"https:\/\/trustpair.com\/gb\/blog\/pharming-what-is-it-and-how-can-you-protect-yourself\/\">pharming attack<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>In reality, you\u2019ll be revealing financial information or sending funds to a scammer who\u2019ll disappear when (if) the fraud is revealed.<\/p>\n<p>They can also use phishing, or other social engineering techniques to steal sensitive information.<\/p>\n<h3>Elements to prosecute for wire fraud<\/h3>\n<p>In legal terms, wire fraud is committed when <strong>several elements are gathered<\/strong>. They require extensive preparation but have high potential payoffs.<\/p>\n<h3>Vendor fraud<\/h3>\n<p>Another scheme that leads to wire fraud is <a href=\"https:\/\/trustpair.com\/gb\/vendor-fraud-prevention\/\">vendor fraud<\/a>. Here, <strong>scammers pretend to be one of your suppliers by email<\/strong> and ask for the funds to be transferred to a different account.
