This information can lead to another kind of fraud, like vendor fraud, or spoofing.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Financial crime is linked with and contributes to, even more sordid forms of crime: child and people trafficking, political corruption, and terrorism financing. That\u2019s a real-world application of \u201cEvil begets evil\u201d, a vicious cycle of illicit financial flows.<\/p>\n<h2>What is the impact of economic crime?<\/h2>\n<p>Besides the human and social impact, <strong>economic crime also costs businesses and society a lot of money.<\/strong> It isn\u2019t only the direct financial crime, it\u2019s also the consequences of it.<\/p>\n<p>Selling illegal goods and services is bad enough, but it\u2019s worse when the proceeds are reinvested in legal entities \u2014 to be accessible in other countries, or used without attracting attention. That\u2019s when another layer of economic crime comes on: <a href=\"https:\/\/trustpair.com\/gb\/blog\/anti-money-laundering-everything-you-need-to-know\/\">money laundering.<\/a><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>According to a United Nations report, money laundering accounts for 2-5% of the world\u2019s GDP (that\u2019s about $2 trillion!)<\/li>\n<li>According to the U.S. Sentencing Commission, 1,001 cases of money laundering were reported in 2022\u2019s financial year. The median loss for these cases was over $300K.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Crime money laundering isn\u2019t the only culprit. In 2019 according to the USSC, embezzlement and theft accounted for 25% of all economic crime cases.<\/p>\n<p>When it comes to financial fraud, our recent survey found that:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>96% of US companies were targeted by at least one financial fraud attempt in 2023.<\/li>\n<li>94% were targeted multiple times.<\/li>\n<li>36% of victims of successful fraud lost more than $1M.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Little by little, economic crime spreads to the fabric of our society, taking over businesses and even governments. AML guidelines contain different components such as:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Know Your Customer (KYC) process,<\/li>\n<li>Know Your Supplier (KYS) process,<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/trustpair.com\/gb\/blog\/the-foolproof-way-to-identify-ultimate-beneficial-owners\/\">Identifying your Ultimate Beneficial Owner<\/a> (UBO)<\/li>\n<li>Risk management strategy.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>In the United States, federal regulations vary depending on the states from which your business operates. Being compliant is important to protect yourself from fines (which are hefty!), and from the risk of financial crime itself.<\/p>\n<h3>Internal policies<\/h3>\n<p>PwC\u2019s Economic Crime Survey of 2022 found that the main perpetrators of the most damaging fraud cases were:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>43% external,<\/li>\n<li>31% internal,<\/li>\n<li>26% collusion between internal and external.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The facts are clear: <strong>economic crime happens through third parties, but also with the help of your own employees<\/strong>. That\u2019s why internal policies are so important to prevent white-collar crimes in your company.<\/p>\n<p>For example, ING (the financial institution) decided to implement its own corporate policy against economic crime. This kind of statement is important to take a public stand against financial crimes.<\/p>\n<p>But it shouldn&#8217;t just be about press releases and official statements: to be effective, these should be paired with a strong internal policy that includes:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Clear safety guidelines to follow,<\/li>\n<li>Ongoing security training with up-to-date training materials to spot common red flags of fraud,<\/li>\n<li>Direct access to an internal person or a law enforcement agency to report suspicions of economic crimes to,<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/trustpair.com\/gb\/blog\/internal-control-the-key-to-secure-financial-systems\/\">Internal controls<\/a> to ensure that all the above are respected,<\/li>\n<li>Regular reports and audits on your security.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>With the rise of cybercrime, it\u2019s even more important for leaders to be proactive in their fraud detection and prevention.
